Classic Stainless Steel Bowls are built around the material vets, breeders and kennel managers reach for almost without exception. Dog food and water bowls in stainless steel don't build up bacteria in scratches the way plastic does, they survive a determined chewer, and they don't chip or shatter the way glass and ceramic will on a hard floor.
What's less widely known is that stainless isn't a single material — there are hundreds of grades, and an alloy that performs beautifully as an appliance panel isn't necessarily one you'd want holding a meal. Grade is the question worth asking before you buy any metal bowl.
SAFETY
Pet bowls sit in an odd regulatory gap. Cookware sold for people is held to food-contact standards; a bowl labelled "for pet use only" often isn't held to much at all. That gap is how bowls have ended up recalled for radioactive content and how others have turned up carrying lead.
Stainless steel is the material that closes most of that risk on its own. It doesn't leach into food, it doesn't need a glaze — and glaze is where the lead problems in ceramic bowls almost always originate.
The one thing worth checking on any metal bowl, ours included, is the alloy grade. Ask the seller. A retailer who can't tell you what grade they're selling is telling you something.

Typically best for kittens, puppies and toy breeds under 10 lbs or so.

Typically best for cats and small breeds between 10 and 25 lbs.

Typically best for small to medium breeds between 25 and 45 lbs.

26 cm:
Typically best for medium breeds between 45 and 70 lbs.
Approximately 10.2″ across and 2.4″ deep. About 220 g empty.
30 cm:
Typically best for large breeds between 70 and 100 lbs.
Approximately 11.8″ across and 2.8″ deep. About 280 g empty.
34 cm:
A genuinely large bowl by most standards. Suits giant breeds over 100 lbs, or works as a shared water dish for several big dogs.
